Top Tips to Help You Stay Active & Independent

It’s never too early to take steps that help you stay healthy, mobile and socially active. Follow our top tips to keep moving and living the life you enjoy.

Build Strength and Improve Your Balance

It’s important to keep your muscles, bones and joints strong. Find an activity that helps you maintain and build your strength, such as yoga or using gentle weights at a gym. Alternatively, use everyday chores like gardening, laundry or shopping as opportunities to carry bags or heavier items and keep yourself strong.

You can reduce your risk of falls if you improve your balance. Activities such as bowling or Tai Chi are ideal for this and are accessible for all ages.

Keep Moving

Think about how you spend your day: do you sit down, lie down or recline a lot? Break up periods of inactivity by adding more movement to your day. Get up and move around regularly. A 20 minute walk each day is ideal, but light housework also helps.

Add in some exercise that increases your rate of breathing, such as swimming, cycling or walking. Even walking briskly up and down the stairs a few times each day will help.

Look After Your Feet

Foot problems can cause mobility issues and pain, limiting your social and physical activities. Consider routine podiatry checks so that any problems can be treated early.

Stay Connected with Friends and Family

Whether you go to an exercise class with a friend, join a walking group, or agree to park your car further from your destination than usual so you can take a walk together, find ways to add some social interaction into your exercise.

Think About Your Diet

Nutrition is important, so make sure you have a healthy and balanced diet.

Hydration, Hydration, Hydration

Your body loses water constantly, and dehydration can cause some very unpleasant - and serious - health issues. Keep your water intake topped up and remember that if you feel thirsty, your body is telling you that it may already be dehydrated.

Keep your Home Safe

Think about your home environment and make changes before you need them. Lighting, stair safety and bathroom adaptations can prevent future problems.
